Poem: Love is a Game

That’s what we do, isn’t it?
Pretend we don’t care as much,
So we don’t get burnt first,
So we’re not the one left feeling rejected,
So we can keep face.

I played my cards too wide.
I was open for the whole world to see.
You saw it.
Then, of course, I lost the game!

You took complete control.
You made it quite clear,
I know you don’t feel the same.

I didn’t play my cards right.
To be honest,
I didn’t even know about this game.
But even though I lost,
I feel like the winner all the same.

Who wants to be stuck in such a perpetual game?
Where showing emotions is not ace.
Where I cannot be the queen that I am.
But you remain king all the same?

I’ve put the deck down,
I won’t shuffle for another round.
All this playing around,
My life is not a game.
